Guide to U Street Corridor

The Bohemian Cavern in Washington DC's U Street Corridor

U Street Corridor is a commercial and residential district located in Northwest Washington, D.C. The cost of living is somewhat inexpensive compared to other neighborhoods and the feel of a mom-and-pop retail environment offers a diverse amount of options for shopping. The convenience of the U Street Metro Station and the amount of nightlife possibilities also attracts homebuyers.

Bordered by Adams Morgan and Shaw

U Street Corridor is roughly bounded by R Street to the south, 16th Street to the west, 2nd Street to the east and a section of Florida Avenue and Irving Street to the north. Logan Circle borders U Street Corridor to the south, sections of Kalorama, Dupont Circle, and Adams Morgan are to the west, Ledroit Park/Bloomingdale to the east and Columbia Heights to the north. Shaw also borders the southeast section of the neighborhood.

A U.S. Historic District

This Historic district is also on the list of the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. The U Street Corridor used to be home for the nation’s largest urban African-American community. Its decline began with the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1968. Since the riots took place following the assassination, the community has made redevelopment a priority and to return the area to a more desirable area for commercial products and homebuyers. This is still evident today, with rehabilitation projects and the Reeves Center as living examples.

Don’t be Afraid to Walk

Any current resident will talk about the areas abundance of traveling benefits. U Street Corridor boasts two metro stations within its boundaries, as well as the Metrobus and valuable parking spots for cars. The U Street and Shaw-Howard University Metro stations both service the Green and Yellow line and are within eight blocks from one another. The 63, 64, 90, 92, 93, 96, and the X3 all travel within this neighborhood.

Buses and cars are reliable forms of transportation here, but you might not need them. Unless your occupation drives you somewhere else, this neighborhood mostly has everything within walking distance.

Row Houses & Other Options

This neighborhood is home to some beautiful Victorian row houses. Harrison Square Townhomes is a community of roughly 98 modern row houses while other great locations are on V, 13th, and 14th Streets to name a few. There are also some apartment and condo buildings located within the area. Some current projects built over the last couple of years are the Floridian and Moderno.

Nightlife Options Have Increased

One of the city’s most popular going-out destinations, U Street Corridor is home to some historic restaurants and music venues. Ben’s Chili Bowl is a landmark restaurant located on U Street. It is known locally for its chili half-smokes and milkshakes and also attracts plenty of celebrities.

Next door is Lincoln Theater. This theater offers live music shows, comedy, and other productions. Not far down the road is the 9:30 Club. This intimate concert venue offers shows for all-ages while having a light-pub menu and four bars. Off of 14th Street is another great music venue, the Black Cat, which is a multilevel spot providing rock/alternative live-music. If that wasn’t enough, the Howard Theater, on the list of National Register of Historic Places, is a great place to watch local and international acts located on T Street.

For other great dining and club options, check out American Ice Company, Mandu, Policy Restaurant & Lounge, and Marvin—a Belgian restaurant paying homage to Marvin Gaye with a fabulous upstairs roof bar.

Meridian Hill Park and Howard University

Meridian Hill Park is another U.S. National Historic Landmark within the neighborhood. This 12-acre urban park is home to some interesting statues, including one of Joan of Arc and Dante. Its thirteen-basin cascade fountain is one of its eye catching features while the traditional Sunday drum sessions are also appealing to residents and park-goers.

Howard University dominates most of the eastern part of the neighborhood. This federally chartered private university was founded in 1867 and also has graduate schools for business, pharmacy, law, social work, and divinity among others.

Just north of Howard University is the Bruce Monroe Community Park. This block-long neighborhood park offers basketball courts, a tennis court, and a community garden.

Overall the U Street Corridor has some great establishments to dine and listen to live music, and these appeal to a diverse mix of D.C. residents. The convenience of the U Street Metro station and an array of town homes offer homebuyers an interesting place to settle that might not be found in other neighborhoods.
